Stories by Ian Rankin, AL Kennedy and US author Willy Vlautin take their inspiration from the unique music of Tom Waits
this week. 



All three stories explore the distinctive world created by the legendary musician – a sleazy world peopled by
down-at-heel characters on the edge of society, or outcasts and deadbeats singing of loss and longing.

Come along to some dark, dangerous places with this trio of monologues, their titles
taken from Tom Waits's music and their tone inspired by his obsession with the edges of society. All feature the
detritus of humanity, yet all have a lyrical humanity at their heart. AL Kennedy's opener, read by Peter Capaldi, is
told in the cracked, slightly hysterical voice of a man teetering on the edge, reaching out to a stranger. You can
almost hear Waits's barbed wire and bourbon-laced croak.

A man finds himself reaching out to a perfect stranger in the wee small hours of the morning – who might be his
last chance of salvation. 



2/3 Muriel



By US novelist and singer-songwriter Willy Vlautin. Read by Ed Stoppard. 



A small-town forklift truck driver named Whitey returns to his old neighbourhood and the bar he used to drink in before
his breakdown. All the characters are still there, but he cannot help but notice how they all do their best to avoid
mentioning his dead wife Muriel. 



3/3 Step Right Up



By acclaimed Scottish writer and broadcaster Ian Rankin. Read by Dominic Cooper. 



A young Jack-the-lad Londoner finds himself taken under the wing of a street market trader, known locally as Saviour,
until a fatal stabbing forces him to question the morality of his mentor. Soon he begins to wonder how his mentor got
his name.
